MORI User Screencasts

As part of Vita Rara's ongoing program to create easy to use training materials, we have created a series of screencasts for users to view. These short video programs allow users to actually see MORI in use while listening to detailed instructions on how to perform many of the common functions of MORI.

They will give you a good idea of how the MORI interface works and what you can do with it. Use them in conjunction with the MORI User Guide to get a head start on using MORI to manage your lodge's data.

We strongly recommend using the Quicktime formatted videos due to the quality and smaller file size. We do provide the Windows Media Player version for those without the Quicktime player, but it is not recommended. To get the Quicktime player go here and download it.

Getting Started

For those of you new to MORI, you need to create an account. In order to create an account you must be recognized as Secretary of your lodge/chapter, set up as Assistant Secretary by your lodge/chapter's secretary, the Grand Secretary or work in some other capacity recognized by your Grand Jurisdiction as needing access to MORI.

If you don't fill one of these positions, you are currently not authorized to obtain a MORI account. If you do fill one of those positions and still can't create your account, call your Grand Lodge and confirm that they have updated your status.

If you still can't create your account contact MORI support at morisupport(at)vitarara(dot)net or by calling (518)272-4455 Monday - Friday from 9 AM to 5:30 PM.

After you have confirmed your status and created your account your Grand Jurisdiction will mail you a letter. This letter confirms your account and has a key which must be entered in your computer before you can start.

We have created two screencasts that will walk you through the process of creating your account and entering your key. Click on the links below to view in either Quicktime or Windows Media.

The Member Screen

The Member Screen is the first screen most users will interact with. It allows you to find members and edit their records, add new members and affiliates, add foreign affiliates and print a lodge roster.

Below are three screencasts to introduce you to the Member Screen and it's basic functions.

Note: We strongly recommend using the Quicktime formatted videos due to the quality and smaller file size. We do provide the Windows Media Player version for those without the Quicktime player, but it is not recommended. To get the Quicktime player go here and download it.

The Mail Room

The Mail Room is one of the most frequently used areas in MORI. Here you can print labels and envelopes, generate contact lists, Years in Good Standing sheets and other reports along with database files that allow you to create your own customized reports.

To use the database files, you will need a program that is compatible with .dbf files. We recommend OpenOffice.org which you can get at http://www.openoffice.org/

Recording Member Payments

Recording a member payment is a simple operation but it needs to be done with care. A few things you need to know; you MUST click the find button when changing member records. A common mistake is entering a payment for the wrong person because you didn't click find.

If you do enter a payment incorrectly, it cannot be deleted. You may only enter in a voiding transaction in the negative amount. This is to maintain a reliable audit trail whereby the auditor can be confident no transactions have been deleted.

This screencast covers the following scenarios;
  1. Recording a standard dues payment
  2. Voiding a transaction
  3. Recording a partial dues payment
  4. Recording payments to two or more categories on one check

The Budget

The budget features of MORI allow you to track your income and your expenses. The financial information of your lodge is only viewable by the secretary and any assistant secretaries that he may have authorized. Nobody at Grand Lodge or from any other lodge is able to see any of your financial data.

The budget is linked to vouchers, member payments and non-member payments. Whenever you process a transaction on one of these screens, it will be applied to your budget once you have set it up.

One word of caution, NEVER under any circumstances set up a dues or arrears related income category. There is already an automatically generated dues category which is linked to the dues processing within MORI. Any other dues category you may create would not be linked to the dues processing and would not be calculated properly.

Watch the screencast below for details on setting up and managing your budget.

We strongly recommend using the Quicktime formatted videos due to the quality and smaller file size. We do provide the Windows Media Player version for those without the Quicktime player, but it is not recommended. To get the Quicktime player go here and download it.

Vouchers

Vouchers are used to authorize the disbursement of funds. MORI can create printable vouchers that can be categorized and applied to your budget. You should have your budget set up in order to get the full value of the voucher system in MORI.

View the screencast below to learn the specifics of creating, categorizing, editing and voiding vouchers.

Entering a Foreign Affiliate

This edition of the MORI screencasts covers the newly modified Add Foreign Affiliate screen. This new screen simplifies the entering of information and the communication between your Grand Lodge and you concerning the progress of the petition.
Remember, a foreign affiliate does not need to be from a foreign country. "Foreign" in Masonic speak means anyone from outside your grand jurisdiction. So, if you're in the Grand Lodge of New York, then somebody from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts would be a "foreigner."

One other thing to remember about the Add Foreign Affiliate. You must go step by step. You can't enter a lodge until you've entered a grand jurisdiction. You can't enter any events until you've added his previous lodges. Get as much information as you can from your petitioner in order to make the process as easy as possible.
